Summary
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Combining radiation therapy with chemotherapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of etoposide plus radiation therapy followed by combination chemotherapy in treating children with newly diagnosed advanced medulloblastoma.Phase:

Criteria
DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS:- Histologically diagnosed advanced (high grade) childhood medulloblastoma
- Residual disease of at least 1.5 cm2 in size on MRI or CT scan OR
- Evidence of CNS or extraneural metastases
PATIENT CHARACTERISTICS:
Age:
- 3 to 21
Performance status:
- Not specified
Life expectancy:
- Not specified
Hematopoietic:
- Absolute neutrophil count at least 1,500/mm^3
- Platelet count at least 100,000/mm^3
Hepatic:
- SGPT less than 5 times normal
- Bilirubin less than 1.5 mg/dL
Renal:
- Creatinine less than 1.7 mg/dL OR
- Creatinine clearance greater than 70 mL/min
Other:
- Not pregnant or nursing
- Fertile patients must use effective contraception
