Inclusion Criteria:

- Adults undergoing lumbar spinal surgery

Exclusion Criteria:

- Lack of informed patient consent

- Acute or chronic renal failure

- Known allergy or intolerance to pethidine or tramadol

- Chronic respiratory insufficiency

- Epidural contraindicated (coagulopathy, systemic infection)
