Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:

• adults presenting for routine thyroid biopsy, paracentesis or thoracentesis in interventional radiology

Exclusion Criteria:

• Patients requiring sedation

• Patients with altered mental status

• Children

• Patients allergic to lidocaine or sodium bicarbonate
